NZD/USD Breakout - RBNZ Holds While Fed Cuts

NZD/USD broke above the 0.6200 level this week, reaching 0.6235 - its highest since January 2025. The catalyst is a familiar one: the Reserve Bank of New Zealand held rates steady at its July meeting while Federal Reserve rate-cut expectations continue to build, creating a widening rate differential in the Kiwi's favour.

RBNZ Holds, Fed Cuts

The RBNZ kept the Official Cash Rate at 5.25% at its July meeting, citing persistent services inflation and a resilient labour market. The RBNZ's next meeting is in August, where a hold is also widely expected. Meanwhile, the Fed is heading toward its September cut. This divergence - RBNZ stable, Fed easing - is textbook currency bullishness for NZD/USD.

Technical Analysis

The 0.6200 level was tested and rejected twice in May and June before finally giving way this week. The breakout was clean, with the weekly candle closing well above the resistance zone. The measured move target from the base pattern formed since March 2026 projects to 0.6450. Support is now at 0.6180-0.6200.

  • Resistance: 0.6280 / 0.6350 / 0.6450
  • Support: 0.6200 (breakout level) / 0.6140
  • Trend: Bullish above 0.6100

Trading Approach

NZD/USD offers an attractive long setup. Entry on a retest of the 0.6200 breakout level. Stop below 0.6140. Target 0.6350 initially, then 0.6450. Given NZD/USD's typical daily range of 60-80 pips, this represents a 3-4 week swing trade with favourable macro tailwinds.
