NFP June Report - 154K Jobs Added, Unemployment at 4.1%
The June Non-Farm Payrolls report released Friday showed the US economy added 154,000 jobs in June, missing the 170,000 consensus estimate. The unemployment rate ticked up to 4.1% from 4.0%, and average hourly earnings grew 3.6% year-over-year, also a slight miss. The report is consistent with a labour market that is softening but not collapsing.
Why the Miss Matters
The NFP is one of the Fed's two primary mandates (alongside inflation). A below-consensus number with rising unemployment reduces the argument for keeping rates elevated. Combined with the soft CPI data from earlier in the month, the June jobs report completes a picture of an economy that no longer needs restrictive monetary policy. Fed officials speaking after the release described the data as "consistent with our evolving view."

Trading Framework for NFP Weeks
NFP is released on the first Friday of every month at 13:30 UTC. The volatility spike in the first 5-10 minutes is often a trap - price can move sharply in one direction before reversing as the initial reaction is absorbed. The professional approach is to wait for the dust to settle (30-60 minutes post-release), identify the confirmed direction, then trade that momentum with tighter stops given the elevated ATR environment.
