June CPI Comes In Below Expectations - Rate Cut Bets Surge
The June US Consumer Price Index came in at 2.7% year-over-year on Tuesday, meaningfully below the 2.9% consensus estimate and down from May's 2.9% reading. Core CPI, which excludes food and energy, also softened to 3.1% from 3.3%. The print is the clearest evidence yet that the Fed's 2% target is within reach.
Immediate Market Impact
- Gold: jumped $45 to $3,370 within 30 minutes of the release
- DXY: fell 0.8% to 102.2
- EUR/USD: gained 80 pips to 1.1180
- Bitcoin: rallied 4.1% to $109,200
- US 2-year yield: fell 14 bps (largest one-day drop in months)
What This Means for Rate Policy
Fed funds futures now price a 95% probability of a September 25 bps cut, up from 75% before the release. More significantly, markets are now pricing a second cut by December 2026. This repricing of the entire rate path has profound implications for assets sensitive to real yields.
Trading Implications
Soft inflation data is unambiguously positive for gold, which rises as real yields fall. It is also supportive for risk assets including crypto, as lower rates reduce the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets. The Dollar is likely to remain under pressure in the near term.
For Forex traders: favour Dollar shorts. EUR/USD, GBP/USD, and AUD/USD all benefit from a weaker Dollar environment. The biggest winner structurally is the Yen, as the rate gap between Japan and the US narrows.
