Bitcoin Dominance Drops Below 50% - Altcoin Season Confirmed
Bitcoin's market dominance - the share of total crypto market cap held by BTC - dropped below 50% this week for the first time since January 2025. This is one of the most reliable indicators that capital is beginning to rotate from Bitcoin into altcoins, historically signalling the start of an "alt season" where smaller coins outperform BTC significantly.
Historical Context
In the 2021 cycle, BTC dominance fell from 72% to 40% over six months as Ethereum and then small-cap altcoins surged. In the 2024 cycle, dominance peaked at 58% before declining as ETH and Solana began outperforming. Each time dominance breaks below 50% with momentum, it has historically preceded a 30-60 day period of significant altcoin outperformance.
Which Altcoins to Watch
- Ethereum (ETH): The most liquid altcoin and first beneficiary of rotation; ETH/BTC ratio is recovering from 4-year lows
- Solana (SOL): Ecosystem activity at record highs; DEX volume and active addresses outperforming
- Avalanche (AVAX): Institutional L1 with growing RWA (real world assets) use case
- Chainlink (LINK): Data oracle infrastructure benefiting from DeFi growth across all chains
Risk Management in Altcoins
Altcoins offer higher return potential but also higher risk. Compared to Bitcoin, they typically have lower liquidity, wider bid-ask spreads, and can drop 50-80% in bear phases. Position sizing must be significantly smaller than for BTC or ETH. Never allocate more than 5% of a trading account to any single small-cap altcoin, regardless of the thesis.
The rule in alt season: take profits early and often. These moves reverse faster than they begin.
